Why This Blog?

This is where the journey begins. My first original drawing in years, along with a great quote from one of my favourite guitar players, 'Find what you're best at and exaggerate it.' - Steve Vai, has inspired me to really make something of my drawing skills that I have had since childhood.

I've always been able to draw, so consequently I haven't learnt the basics. I know you're probably thinking, 'If you can already draw, why would you need to?

The truth is that I'm not using my skills to their full potential. I want to be able to draw anything, on demand, from any angle, and make a great job of it. I want to create cartoon characters and find what brings them to life. I want to be able to exaggerate proportions and draw superheroes like in the Marvel comics (of which I have very little interest in reading, oddly enough). Most importantly, I want to be a really great artist that doesn't need a reference.

This is the start, all the rough work, the mistakes and the tips I have found that work. I'm going back to basics to uncover what my skills are built on.
